PROJECT
DESCRIPTION
The Departments of Biology &
Chemistry at Valdosta State University demonstrated
sufficient need to the Board of Regents of the University
System of Georgia to secure funding for this 148,000
SF Laboratory Building. The IPG design team was awarded
the project based upon nearly twenty-five years of
service to the University System of Georgia and experience
and expertise in laboratory building types. The building
contains an administrative suite with 41 offices,
11 classrooms, 22 teaching laboratories, 19 research
laboratories, 3 auditoriums, 2 conference rooms, plus
seminar rooms, and support space. The building is
sited adjacent to historic West Hall with the architectural
style in context with the existing Spanish Mission
architecture of the campus. Comparable massing was
a design issue on the tight building site. The building
design utilizes a three-story atrium with clerestory
lighting to separate laboratory spaces from classrooms,
offices, and other support spaces. Four (4) greenhouses
at rooftop level can simulate different climatic conditions
for botany study. IPG provided construction administration
producing field reports, managing monthly meeting
minutes, responding to Requests for Information, reviewing
shop drawings, and managing all elements of construction
administration.
